PSC-TCCF Project Joins Forces with Partners to Enhance Financial and Human Rights Literacy for “Saleng” (Informal Waste Pickers) in Surat Thani

On March 17, 2026, the PSC-TCCF project by WWF Thailand, in collaboration with Surat Thani City Municipality and Blue Ocean Plastic Recycling Co., Ltd., organized a workshop for informal waste pickers in Surat Thani province. The primary goal of this activity was to strengthen knowledge on financial literacy and human rights, drawing the interest and participation of over 90 local Saleng members.   The event featured comprehensive capacity-building activities. These included lectures on financial risk management and saving tools such as Section 40 of the Social Security Act, the National Savings Fund (NSF), and the Surat Thani City Municipality Community Welfare Fund (One Baht a Day) as well as raising awareness about human rights in the workplace.

This was coupled with promoting occupational safety by distributing personal protective equipment (PPE), such as raincoats, and providing free lubricants changes for the Saleng vehicle. The event was also honored by the presence of various partner networks participating as observers. Notable attendees included Deputy Mayor of Trang City Municipality, and team; representatives from GIZ Thailand; the Director of the Thailand Institute of Packaging and Recycling Management for Sustainable Environment (TIPMSE); waste and plastics management experts; as well as representatives from WWF Germany and WWF Indonesia. The project remains committed to supporting and empowering the Saleng professionals to achieve financial stability, rights protection, and a sustainably improved quality of life.
