On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, WWF Thailand, alongside the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the Faculty of Forestry at Kasetsart University, and nine partner organisations, proudly launched “Beautiful Banteng…Iconic Rarity of Lowland Forests” at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre’s Auditorium.
This remarkable book, the first of its kind, sheds light on the world of the banteng (Bos javanicus), a rare and endangered species of wild cattle native to Southeast Asia. Through the lens of experts, researchers, and photographers, the book takes readers on a journey into the lives of these elusive animals, providing in-depth insights into their behaviour, habitat, and the urgent need for their conservation.
The launch also featured a stunning photography exhibition, showcasing captivating images of the banteng in its natural environment. These powerful visuals aim to raise awareness of the challenges the banteng faces due to habitat loss and hunting.

Once abundant in Thailand’s lowland forests, the banteng population has plummeted, earning its spot on the IUCN’s red list of endangered species. Today, the banteng’s survival is hanging by a thread, with their numbers fragmented and in sharp decline.

The event brought together key stakeholders, researchers, and conservationists, all united by a shared mission: to protect and restore the banteng’s population in Thailand. This collaboration between WWF Thailand and its partners is a shining example of what can be achieved when passionate individuals and organisations work together for a common cause.
We must act now to preserve the banteng and ensure this magnificent species continues to thrive in the wild. Every effort counts in securing a future where the banteng roams free in Thailand’s forests once again.
