Tigers are a conservation-dependent species. They can survive and thrive if their population and habitat are safe. The Smart Patrol System is a tool for natural resource protection that places emphasis on staff quality, cutting-edge technology and equipment, as well as standardised information and strategic plans.
The DNP is in charge of the all-important mission to protect Thailand’s natural resources and WWF Thailand has made it a priority to assist forest rangers in providing tiger protection through a Smart Patrol System. Patrolling missions are a tough and risky task, especially when confronted with poachers or even dangerous animals, so it is crucial for rangers to work with knowledge, confidence, and safety in their patrol mission.
The tiger recovery program has consistently supported ranger capacity building and organised training for rangers through a variety of courses, including GPS, compass, maps, smart data and recording analyses, patrol techniques, first aid, and support for field gear, patrol equipment, food supplies, and renovation of smart patrol centres and ranger stations.
The program also provides technical support on patrol database and data analysis via the SMART programme for the benefit of patrol planning. This is to ensure that the forest rangers who sacrifice their time and energy to protect Thailand’s forests and wildlife are able to continue to do their work effectively, with pride and dignity.
