Press Conference to Launch Trang Municipality’s Plastic Smart City Action Plan and Tourism Business Commitment for Towards Plastic-Free Oceans: Commitment from the tourism sector in Koh Libong, Koh Mook, and Pak Meng.

February 17, 2025The World Wide Fund for Nature Thailand (WWF), in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the United Nations Environment Programme Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (UNEP COBSEA), held a press conference to launch the Plastic Smart City Action Plan in Trang Municipality. This initiative marks a significant collaboration aimed at reducing single-use plastic (SUP) in the tourism sector and local communities. Trang Municipality currently has a strong volunteer-based environmental network, the Local Environmental Volunteer Network (LEV-Net), which plays a key role in driving various sustainability initiatives. The project is also advancing waste management measures that align with the local context to ensure long-term sustainability.

This project is part of a commitment to establishing an effective plastic waste management system and represents a significant step toward making Trang province as a model for environmentally responsible tourism. The initiative focuses on designing appropriate measures that consider the best advantages of all stakeholders in the area, leading to practical actions that effectively reduce single-use plastic (SUP). As part of the effort, reusable mesh bags for recycling waste have been distributed to participating communities to encourage proper waste segregation.

The event was honored by the presence of Dr. Paisarn Kuearoon, Deputy Mayor of Trang Municipality, who presided over the opening ceremony. Joining the event were members of the Trang Municipality communities and tourism business operators from Koh Libong, Koh Mook, and Pak Meng.
