Background
For over 50 years, WWF has been protecting the future of nature. As the world’s leading conservation organization, WWF operates in over 100 countries and is supported by nearly 5 million members worldwide. Our unique approach combines global reach with a science-based foundation, driving innovative solutions that benefit both people and nature.
In 2022, over 100 nations at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) committed to the “30 by 30” goal—protecting 30% of terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats by 2030. The Government of Thailand has endorsed this initiative.
Currently, Thailand has permanently protected about 21% of its terrestrial and 5% of its marine habitats. Achieving 30% within 7 years poses a significant challenge, requiring strong collaboration between public and private sectors.
WWF-Thailand aims to support key government agencies through our 30 by 30 Conservation Program. This includes developing a national framework for recognizing “Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures” (OECMs), which are not official protected areas but provide long-term biodiversity benefits. Many government lands likely meet OECM criteria.
WWF-Thailand supports key government agencies through the 30 by 30 Conservation Program by developing a national framework to recognize “Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures” (OECMs)—areas outside official protected zones that still deliver long-term biodiversity benefits. In addition, we are installing camera traps in conservation areas and community forests to collect vital biodiversity data and strengthen the scientific basis for OECM recognition.
