Project Title: Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex Wildlife Conservation Project
Position: Consultant – Elephant Early Warning Center Officer
Supervisor: Thanee Dawrueng
Duration: 1 August 2026 – 30 June 2027
Duty Station: Smart Early Warning System Center, Kui Buri National Park, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand
Background
The Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex Wildlife Conservation Project has a key objective of reducing human-wildlife conflict, particularly issues arising from wildlife moving outside protected areas into agricultural landscapes, resulting in crop damage and property losses for surrounding communities. These conflicts are primarily caused by wild elephants and other wildlife species that forage beyond protected area boundaries.
To address this challenge, the project, in collaboration with relevant agencies and partners, has developed and implemented a SMART Early Warning System linked to wildlife camera traps. This system enables real-time monitoring of wildlife movements and is integrated with a rapid response mechanism involving rapid response teams, community networks, and WWF field personnel. Together, these stakeholders work to provide timely alerts, monitor situations, and implement preventive measures to minimize potential impacts on local communities and agricultural areas.
Within this framework, the consultant will play a key role in supporting wildlife monitoring and surveillance through the SMART Early Warning System, as well as database management, data analysis and synthesis, research implementation, and the preparation of technical and operational reports. These efforts will contribute to strengthening wildlife conservation management, enhancing wildlife monitoring and response systems, and supporting sustainable and effective mitigation of human-wildlife conflict in areas surrounding Kui Buri National Park.
Objective / Outcome of the Project
To improve wildlife monitoring and early warning capabilities in Kui Buri National Park and surrounding communities through the effective use of camera trap technology, coordinated response mechanisms, and scientific data analysis. Expected outcomes include improved wildlife detection, reduced crop damage, enhanced databases, strengthened collaboration, and evidence-based conservation management.
