The Forest Forward aims to conserve and enhance the connectivity and integrity of key forest landscapes in Thailand, including the Dawna-Tenasserim Landscape (Mae Ping National Park and Kaeng Krung National Park), Thap Lan National Park within the Dong Phayayen World Heritage Site, and the Songkhram River Watershed. It supports Thailand’s conservation targets by securing critical forests and related ecosystems through effective management, protection, and restoration.
A defining feature of the project is the fully engaging government with strong involvement of local communities in biodiversity conservation efforts through secure wildlife habitat corridor and the promotion of sustainable and alternative livelihoods. The central themes include innovation, landscape connectivity, and flagship species conservation.
Technological tools such as unmanned aerial vehicles will be employed for monitoring, surveillance, and potentially reforestation. Another key focus is the conservation of priority species, including tigers, elephants, Mekong Giant Catfish, and Siamese rosewood.
In the long term, the project will conserve biodiversity by protecting and restoring critical habitats essential for the survival of key species. It also aims to improve community well-being through sustainable resource management and livelihood enhancement.
Aligned with both national and global conservation priorities and contributing to the 30 by 30, Sustainable Development Goals, the “Protecting and Connecting Thailand’s Forest Landscapes” and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measure (OECM) program highlights the urgent need to address habitat fragmentation and biodiversity loss. With advanced technologies and strong community engagement, it strengthens ecosystem connectivity and amplifies the message to decision-makers and potential funders about the importance of realizing Thailand’s conservation vision.
Ultimately, this project represents a vital step toward achieving national and international conservation objectives, delivering shared benefits to both biodiversity and local communities.
