ISupervised by:            Demis Galli

Duration:                     Dec 1st 2025 – 28th Feb 2026

1. Background of consultancy assignment

Several agroforestry farms have recently transitioned from monoculture plantation systems to diversified, sustainable agroforestry models. This transition requires the development of an efficient and sustainable irrigation system to ensure the optimal growth of multiple crop and tree species under varying water needs.

The project seeks to engage a qualified third-party contractor to design, supply, and install a complete irrigation system—including all required materials, equipment, and labor—across designated agroforestry farm areas.

2. Objective of the consultancy

To design and develop a reliable, efficient irrigation system to ensure tree establishment, maintain understory crops during dry periods, conserve water, and reduce labor. The purpose of this contract is to engage a qualified contractor to design, supply, install, test, and commission an irrigation system suitable for agroforestry production, providing all materials and labor.

3. Scope of work/ Major responsibility

The contractor shall undertake the following tasks:

3.1 Site Assessment

  • Conduct a detailed survey of the farm sites to assess topography, water sources, and water requirements.
  • Identify suitable locations for water storage tanks, pumps, and mainline systems.
  • Determine water demand per plot, considering crop and tree species composition.

3.2 System Design

  • Develop a technical design of the irrigation system (e.g., drip, sprinkler, or hybrid system) appropriate for agroforestry settings.
  • Include water efficiency and sustainability measures (e.g., solar pumping, rainwater harvesting integration if applicable).

3.3 Procurement and Supply of Materials

  • Supply all necessary materials, including but not limited to:
    • Pipes and fittings (mainlines, sub-mains, lateral lines)
    • Valves, emitters, and filters
    • Pumps, tanks, and control systems
    • Solar components
    • Construction materials for supports or shelters (if needed)

3.4 Installation and Construction

  • Conduct full installation of the irrigation system across designated plots.
  • Include trenching, pipe laying, assembly, and connection to water sources.
  • Ensure proper anchoring, leak testing, and system calibration.
  • Train local staff or farm operators on system operation and maintenance.

3.5 Testing, Commissioning, and Handover

  • Test the entire system to ensure optimal performance, pressure balance, and uniform water distribution.
  • Conduct a final handover with representatives of the client and farm management.

4. Materials and Labor Responsibility

The contractor shall be fully responsible for:

  • Procurement and delivery of all required materials and equipment.
  • Hiring, managing, and compensating labor for all construction and installation activities.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards during implementation.
