Major Responsibilities
The Project Advisor will provide strategic guidance and technical support to enhance the effectiveness of large carnivore and prey monitoring, including:
- Advising on survey design, data collection, and analysis methods.
- Supporting capacity building for field teams and data analysts.
- Facilitating collaboration between government agencies, and NGOs.
- Reviewing and improving monitoring tools and protocols.
- Providing input into conservation planning and reporting.
Background
The Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex (KKFC) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Thailand’s most ecologically significant landscapes, home to key species such as tigers, leopards, elephants, and their prey. Effective conservation of large carnivores and prey species requires strategic planning, technical expertise, and collaboration across stakeholders. This TOR outlines the role of a Project Advisor to support monitoring and management efforts.
Scope of work
The Project Advisor will provide strategic guidance and technical support to enhance the effectiveness of large carnivore and prey monitoring in the Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex (KKFC). The advisor will work closely with field teams, data analysts, government agencies, and conservation partners to ensure high-quality data collection, analysis, and application for conservation planning.
- Advising on Survey Design, Data Collection, and Analysis Methods
- Develop and refine scientifically sound survey methodologies for camera trapping.
- Recommend sampling strategies, spatial design, and temporal coverage to ensure robust data.
- Guide the selection and use of analytical tools such as SECR, occupancy models, and GIS-based mapping.
- Ensure data quality control and validation protocols are in place.
- Supporting Capacity Building for Field Teams and Data Analysts
- Design and deliver training workshops on wildlife monitoring techniques, data management, and analysis.
- Provide mentorship and technical coaching to rangers, ecologists, and data staff.
- Providing Input into Conservation Planning and Reporting
- Contribute to the development of conservation strategies for large carnivores and prey species.
- Assist in drafting technical reports, policy briefs, and donor communications.
- Ensure that monitoring results are translated into actionable recommendations.
Output / Deliverables of Performance and Schedule
The Project Advisor is expected to deliver the following outputs aligned with the project’s timeline and conservation goals. These deliverables will contribute directly to improving the monitoring and management of large carnivores and their prey in the Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex (KKFC):
- Survey Design and Data Analysis
- A set of scientifically sound survey protocols tailored to KKFC’s ecological context (e.g., camera trap grid design, sampling effort).
- Technical guidelines for data collection and analysis using SECR, occupancy models, and GIS tools.
- A review report of existing survey methods with recommendations for improvement.
- Capacity Building
- At least two training workshops for field teams and data analysts on wildlife monitoring techniques and data management.
- Development of training materials, manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for field operations and data workflows.
- Ongoing mentorship and technical support sessions (monthly or quarterly) for park rangers and analysts.
- Monitoring Tools and Protocols
- Evaluation report on current monitoring tools (e.g. camera trap systems).
- Recommendations for upgrading or standardizing tools across protected areas.
- Conservation Planning and Reporting
- Technical input into the development of species conservation strategies (e.g., tiger recovery plan, prey management).
- Contributions to six month annual project reports, including data interpretation and conservation recommendations.
- Presentation materials for donor updates, stakeholder briefings, and policy dialogues.
