Consultant on Kaeng Krachan Forest complex wildlife Conservation Project (Elephant SMART Early Warning System)

Overview
The consultant will support nighttime wildlife monitoring and response operations in Kui Buri National Park, focusing on large mammals—particularly wild elephants—that move outside protected areas and pose risks to agricultural lands. The role involves operating camera traps linked to the Elephant SMART Early Warning System, coordinating with rapid response teams and local community networks, and contributing to data collection, analysis, and reporting under the Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex Wildlife Conservation Project.

Major Responsibilities
1) Assist in planning and implementing tracking strategies for wild elephants and other
species leaving Kui Buri National Park to reduce crop damage.
2) Monitor and report daily camera trap activities and wildlife movements.
3) Support the rapid response team in field operations and wildlife tracking.
4) Coordinate with local community networks, Kui Buri National Park staff, and WWF field
teams.
5) Assist in estimating the number of wild elephants outside the forest to inform
management planning.
6) Maintain and update wildlife monitoring databases.
7) Analyze field data and contribute to technical reports.
8) Perform other duties as assigned related to wildlife conservation and monitoring.

Output/deliverable of performance and schedule

The consultant will be expected to produce:

  • Assist in planning and implementing tracking strategies for wild elephants and other
    species leaving Kui Buri National Park to reduce crop damage.

  • Support the rapid response team in field operations and wildlife tracking.
  • Coordinate with local community networks, Kui Buri National Park staff, and WWF field

  • Analyze field data and contribute to technical reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned related to wildlife conservation and monitoring.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in wildlife conservation, ecology, natural resource
    management, or related field.
  • Experience in field-based wildlife monitoring, especially using camera traps and GPS
    tools.
  • Familiarity with data management and analysis software (e.g., Excel, GIS, or wildlife-
    specific platforms).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with government agencies, NGOs, and local communities.
  • Strong communication and reporting skills in Thai and/or English.
  • Physical fitness and willingness to work in remote forest areas, including nighttime
    operations.
  • Knowledge of elephant behavior and human-wildlife conflict mitigation is an asset.
